The Mississippi Department of Education released letter-grade rankings for schools and districts on Thursday. The data is for the 2014-15 school year because of a reporting error from the testing group that delayed its release. Eighteen of Mississippi’s 32 school districts were either an “A” or a “B,” but many of them benefitted from a waiver that allowed them to keep their ranking from the previous year.
Daily Journal education reporter Emma Kent (7:29) joins Derek and Brad to provide details on the new rankings, explain the waiver and note concerns about the formula used to make those rankings.
Also on today’s show, Capitol Bureau chief Bobby Harrison (16:21) discusses Attorney General Jim Hood’s decision not to defend the controversial House Bill 1523. That is the law that allows public officials and others not to provide services for same-sex marriages. A U.S. District judge recently overturned the law, and Gov. Phil Bryant is appealing that ruling on his own.
M. Scott Morris (27:17) reviews “The Secret Life of Pets.” Derek (33:04) breaks down this weekend’s entertainment scene and has an update on Amory resident and American Idol Trent Harmon (37:46).
