Towns throughout Northeast Mississippi held general elections on Tuesday. That included Tupelo, which saw all of its City Council members retain their seats. But there were surprises elsewhere.
On this episode, Caleb Bedillion talks about the Tupelo races (7:54), where only one was close – in Ward 6, where Mike Bryan held off a hard charge by K.C. Caldwell Grist. This current group of council members has worked relatively well together the past four years, and Caleb says they seem happy to “keep the team together.”
William Moore also joins the show to discuss races in Lee County (13:54), where incumbent mayors in Plantersville and Verona both lost. Elsewhere, four-term Smithville Mayor Gregg Kennedy was upset by a mere three-vote margin by Earl Wayne Cowley.
Also today, Capitol Bureau Chief Bobby Harrison looks back at the brief special session held by the state Legislature on Monday (21:32). Lawmakers passed budget bills for three state agencies, with Democrats failing to secure additional appropriations for the office of the Attorney General. Bobby also examines May’s dismal state revenue collections.
